Where We’ve Been

African American Quilt Guild of Los Angeles

Recently, I visited the African American Quilt Guild of Los Angeles in Inglewood to share all things Quilting for Community. I showed student quilts and spoke about our mission and humble beginnings. Though I started out a little nervous, their warmth and enthusiasm made me feel right at home.

The guild meets at the Los Angeles Bridge Association, a space rooted in the legacy of the American Bridge Association—formed in response to segregation and exclusion in the 30s. Their history of creating inclusive spaces felt deeply aligned with Q4C’s values.

AAQG was founded in 1986 by the legendary quilter, educator, and aerospace engineer Carolyn Mazloomi. I also had the honor of meeting Ramsess, a brilliant multi-disciplinary artist, who gifted Q4C two calendars featuring his striking art quilts and glass mosaics. What a powerful legacy!

I’m excited about the beginning of what promises to be a meaningful and collaborative relationship, grounded in shared values, artistry, and community building.

Class Reflections

Lori of Threadworks Art led a class on improv piecing basics that sparked imagination and play. She kicked things off with a paper collage exercise—a fun, low-pressure way to get the creative juices flowing and the practice of starting over without fear. From there, students used design boards to explore fabric placement, rearranging their pieces as they sewed. Lori beautifully guided everyone through the practice of letting go of fixed ideas and embracing change. With lots of collaboration and group feedback, each student’s unique voice emerged in a stunning quilt top.

Meanwhile, Leah taught her very first Crochet for All Ages class—and it was a hit! Students ages 8 and up learned crochet basics side by side with their guardians, creating a joyful, relaxed space to pick up a new yarn craft. It was a wonderful reminder that fiber arts are for everyone, and these classes are a great way to build skills that can continue at home.

Today, let us celebrate someone whose quiet leadership keeps so much of Q4C running smoothly—Linda Fujiu, our incredible volunteer coordinator.

Linda brings heart, patience, and deep dedication to every part of her role. She's the one behind the scenes training new volunteers, organizing our ever-evolving materials, and helping ensure everyone feels confident and supported in our shared space.

Linda is also a gifted artist. Her art quilts are filled with thoughtful creativity!

Join us for an engaging conversation with author Romalyn Tilghman as she explores the themes of her novel, To the Stars Through Difficulties. We'll discuss its historical connections, the power of storytelling, and the role of quilting in weaving together past and present.

We met Laurie during our expansion, when she was helping a client rehome fabric and notions. I’m so glad our paths crossed.
