As a young girl, I sucked my thumb and fiddled with the fabric of my clothing, rolling it between my thumb, pointer and middle fingers. I no longer suck my thumb, however my textile fascination is very much a tactile one. I still fondle fabric and probably always will. It’s soothing and satisfying to me. Perhaps this love for fabric has always been a part of me, in my DNA! You may even find me auditioning the feel of a remnant by rolling it in the way I just mentioned. Is it me or do you also find certain textiles comforting in a peculiar kind of way? Perhaps, any one of us can look back, deep into our early childhood and find a nugget of who we are now or even the moment when that seed was planted! I may not have envisioned quilting in my future, but seeds were certainly planted when I sat on the floor next to my Mother as I watched her toil at the sewing machine to make Halloween costumes and Easter outfits for all of us. I sat on the floor to hand-sew scraps of sky blue satin to make sofas for my dollhouse. I think my Little Lizzie would be super excited (and maybe a little confused) that her adult-self gets to “play” with fabric most days! When was your seed planted? Let’s talk soon! Lizz P.S.
